EDEN ISS — Ground Demonstration of Plant Cultivation Technologies for Safe Food Production in Space

DLR’s EDEN laboratory

The EDEN laboratory at the DLR Institute of Space Systems in Bremen, Germany, was established in 2012. Its purpose is the development and validation of technologies and procedures for plant cultivation in space. The laboratory consists of four main areas: the working area, the analytics room, the utility room and the experimentation room, the heart of the laboratory.

Within the experimentation room are nine growth chambers. There are currently used to cultivate different kind of lettuces and cucumber. The growth chambers also function as breadboards for the EDEN ISS hardware development.
